Celebrating the Enchanting Beauty of Kigezi: A Jewel of Uganda

By Miss Tourism Kigezi

As Miss Tourism Kigezi, it is both an honor and a heartfelt joy to speak about a land that captures the very soul of Uganda’s natural splendor — the Kigezi region. Known fondly as the "Switzerland of Africa," Kigezi is a living masterpiece of rolling green hills, terraced landscapes, sparkling lakes, and a vibrant cultural heritage that leaves every visitor spellbound.

Kigezi’s scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. The mist-covered hills that rise and fall in graceful rhythm tell stories of generations who have lovingly cultivated them into magnificent terraces — a true marvel of agricultural artistry. Each dawn awakens the hills with golden hues, and each sunset drapes them in a soft, dreamlike glow, offering endless moments of wonder.

One cannot speak of Kigezi without mentioning the stunning lakes that dot our region, most notably Lake Bunyonyi. Its calm, deep waters and countless islands create an atmosphere of peace and mystery, making it one of the most beautiful lakes not just in Uganda, but in all of Africa. Whether you’re gliding across its waters on a traditional canoe or gazing across its glassy surface at sunrise, Lake Bunyonyi is a place where time seems to stand still.

One cannot talk of kigezi and forget about the biggest natural forest in Uganda, echuya forest, In kisoro and  rubanda district.known for it's good bamboo, yushania alphia 80% macaranga, kilimandsharia and hagenia abyssinica forest and 20%mountain bamboo yushania alphia.

It is situated on high altitude range running between lake bunyonyi,5km to the east mgahinga gorilla national park.

Talking about kigezi, you can't forget about bwindi impenetrable national game park and reserve, known for it's good specie gorillas in the whole country and having batwa, one of the tribes in kigezi, not forgetting mgahinga national park.

Kigezi is indeed a beautiful world, with virungs mountain ranges, the gahinga, sabinyo and muhabura mountain.wow,I can't speak it all, with lake mulehe in kisoro which is 4.2km,has a depth of 6m and doesn't undergo continuous stratification.

Not forgetting lake chahafi found inside mgahinga and it's a crater lake, being 20km.

There's also lake mutanda in the mountainous landscape in kisoro.

Beyond the brea, thtaking landscapes, Kigezi's true beauty lies in its people. The warm smiles, rich traditions, and unwavering hospitality of the Bakiga people embody the spirit of Uganda. Our vibrant dances, colorful crafts, and melodious songs tell the stories of our ancestors and connect us to our roots with pride and passion.

The region’s biodiversity is another treasure to behold. From the endangered mountain gorillas nestled within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the colorful array of bird species that call Kigezi home, nature thrives abundantly here. Our forests, wetlands, and wildlife sanctuaries are living symbols of our commitment to conservation and harmony with nature.

As Miss Tourism Kigezi, I invite the world to discover and fall in love with this incredible region. Come walk our hills, sail our lakes, dance to the beat of our drums, and be embraced by the magic that is Kigezi. In every leaf, every wave, and every smile, you will find a story worth telling and a memory worth keeping forever.

Kigezi is not just a destination — it is a feeling, a spirit, and a timeless beauty that lives in the heart of everyone who visits it.
